New WhatsApp subscription trap: clicking on the link can be costly

Once again, a WhatsApp subscription trap hides behind what looks like a serious message. What is especially cruel is that you get the message from your own contacts.

So the message appears to be serious because you would think that your contacts do not want you any harm. But beware. If you click on the link in the message, a website opens asking you to answer some questions. This is where the subscription trap is hiding..

So be always watchful, because WhatsApp is very popular with fraudsters.

Initially you are asked numerous questions, you will be then asked to send the message to ten of your contacts. If you do not, you have no chance to participate in the promised contest. But of course, you want to  enter into the competition, because you have already answered so many questions. And so the annoying news spreads like a chain letter.

Apple today introduced new MacBook Pro models, marking the first substantial update its made to its flagship laptops in several years. The new 12-inch and 15-inch laptops are Apple’s thinnest MacBook Pros to date, weighing three and four pounds respectively. According to The Verge, both laptops feature up to 10 hours of battery life and feature a new Touch Bar, which is an OLED touch strip that replaces the function bar with contextual function keys.

Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Apple, said: “It’s a retina display, multi-touch, responding to gestures and taps. We call it Touch Bar. First it replaces the standard system functions, but it goes way beyond that. It adapts to whatever software you’re using.”

Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering for Apple, showed that the Touch Bar could be used for navigation in browsers, photo manipulation and text suggestions when typing. It can also suggest and insert emojis without leaving the keyboard.

The right end of the strip now contains Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner integrated into the power button, which is similar to the one fitted to the iPhone and iPad and can be used to unlock the laptop and confirm payments. The new Force Touch trackpad is also twice the size of the old one.

“In addition to the 13-inch and 15-inch models with the Touch Bar, Apple is also introducing a 13-inch model without the touch strip, which is designed to take the place of the MacBook Air,” The Verge says. “Compared to the old MacBook Air, the new MacBook Pro is over 2mm thinner (at the thickest point) and has 13 percent less volume.

Sirius A is a full desktop PC that fits in your pocket

The new Sirius A:

is a smartphone-sized, mini-PC running a full version of Windows 10 Home.

No more huge tower PCs, this is a Windows 10 machine so small you can fit it in your pocket.

Despite its phone-like appearance, the Sirius A is made by Dutch hardware firm Ockel and runs a full desktop version of Windows 10.  The little machine has all the ports you need to connect a monitor, keyboard and a network cable.

Ockel is looking for additional funding on Indiegogo, the mini-PC also includes:

  • a six-inch touchscreen, 1080p display for use on the go,
  • a microSD booster slot,
  • 3.5mm audio port
  • 64GB in-built flash storage
  • a 3,000mAH battery

However, unlike a smartphone, the Sirius A is equipped with two USB 3.0, a USB Type-C, HDMI, DisplayPort and Ethernet ports, as well as a 12V power input for when it is used as a desktop. The device also have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The Sirius A is shipped with Windows 10 Home 64-bit as an OS, and packs an Intel Atom quad-core processor with 4GB RAM. A heatsink built into the aluminium casing keeps the device cool while the Sirius also houses a gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer.

Ockel claims to be working with Microsoft on developing “switch mode”, which allows the device to function as a mouse or keyboard when attached to a display. Currently, the portable device only has a 3 hour battery life which isn’t that bad considering. However, newer laptops and iPads tend to have around 10 hours. The Sirius measures 8.5cm x 15cm.

The Indiegogo campaign has raised more than $100,000 which was it’s initial target. In fact, it has nearly trippled it by raising $261,371 so far from only 495 investors and has 22 days left. During the campaign period, prices start at $549, however the device will sell for $699. Ockel is hoping to ship the finished product in May 2017.

Last year Ockel released the Sirius B, which has similar specs to the Sirius A but lacks a touchscreen display.

While somewhat novel, a pocketable Windows 10 device isn’t the only device on the market. HP recently released the HP Elite X3 that allows users to dock the six-inch phone and link it to a monitor and keyboard. The Windows Phone device can run Windows 10 apps and a limited Windows 10 desktop. However, the phone is $100 more expensive at $799.

Your account is locked, please verify your data

“Your account is locked” or “Account status suspended” – or something similar,  is the new wave of phishing emails that look as if they apparently come from PayPal. The police have already warned about the deceptively real-looking messages. PayPal have also responded to the scam emails and warns about them on it’s site .

It is not easy to detect whether the emails are genuine or fake. They are published as an exact copy of the original PayPal page. The colour and design are virtually indistinguishable from the original. Even the logo appears to be the original. The sender address  indicates a mail from PayPal itself.
